Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed gambling on numerous card games at a young age. He found himself getting very aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little while and relocated to New York City to play some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were difficult as he played extensive hours and do not win a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker players. He judged he might better his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus attention even more on the game.
The definite advancement in his skills happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would frequently challenge each other. Howard had access into some of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his logical thinking techniques. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL holdem.
He also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was a superb student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. He told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker arena today. He headed to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
