Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he liked gambling on numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in these particular card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were tough as he played extensive hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could improve his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and concentrate even more on poker.

The definite advancement in his abilities happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would regularly challenge each other. Howard was able to access several of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his strategic thinking abilities. Howard used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit hold’em.

Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker arena today. Howard moved to Sin City in 1993 and competed in money games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
