Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he enjoyed betting on numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting really aggressive in these particular card games while competing against his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little while and relocated to New York to participate in some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he would play countless hours and lost a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more rest and concentrate even more on poker.
The definite advancement in his skills happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would often wager against one another. Howard was able to access several of the greatest players in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking abilities. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL holdem.
Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the following 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
